Following the collapse of Classical civilizations, new empires emerged. As the western half of the Roman Empire declined the Eastern half rose in importance and came to be known as the Byzantine Empire. In northern India the Gupta Empire united the divided states. The Tang Dynasty defeated the warlords and reunited China (with the help of the Sui Dynasty), establishing a golden age. Islam grew in importance and influence as it spread across three continents and became the center of the intellectual world.
