The Middle Ages were a time period that lasted from the Fall of the Roman Empire in 476 to the mid-1400's. The collapse of the Roman Empire left Western Europe without any unified political power in place to control the region. Subsequently, feudalism and manorialism emerged. This new system was based on manors, land ownership, and lords. During this time period a strict social hierarchy developed. Christianity grew in political, economic, and social power during the Middle Ages. The Roman Catholic Church became so powerful that it's followers willingly waged war against the Muslims for control of the holy land during the Crusades.
