By the 1500's, many Christians wanted to reform the Church. One such person was the German monk Martin Luther. Disgusted with the Roman Catholic Church's involvement in a number of secular (non-religious) issues and their sale of indulgences, millions of Europeans supported Martin Luther and broke from the Church. The events that followed led to a dramatic decrease in power of the Roman Catholic Church and an increase in literacy rates across Europe and, eventually, the globe.
