School Physicals and Dental Examinations
New York State law requires a health examination for all students entering the school district for the first time and when entering Pre-K or K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grade. A copy of the health examination, completed within the past 12 months, must be provided to the school within 30 days from when your child first starts at the school.
The examination must be completed by a New York State licensed physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner and on the approved NYSED Student Health Examination Form for School.
A dental certificate that states your child has been seen by a dentist or dental hygienist is also asked for at the same time health examinations are required. The school will provide you with a list of dentists and registered dental hygienists who offer dental services on a free or reduced cost basis if you ask for it.
Schools are required to submit data to the NYSDOH regarding student weight status categories. No identifying information is revealed. You may choose to have your child’s information excluded from this report. Please call your child’s school’s health office if you have any questions or concerns.
Health Screenings
Hearing screenings are completed on all students entering the school district for the first time and when entering Pre-K, K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 11th grades. Vision screenings, including near vision and distance acuity, are completed on students entering the district for the first time and when entering Pre–K, K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 11th grades. Students entering the school district for the first time are also screened for color perception. Scoliosis screening is completed on female students entering 5th and 7th grades, while male students are screened when entering 9th grade.
A letter will be sent home, and parents/guardians will be notified if there are findings on the screenings completed at school causing concern or requiring medical follow-up.
Sports Physicals
Sports physicals are typically completed at Geneva High School in May. This is the only opportunity for students to have a free sports physical. All physicals completed at this time will meet the requirements for all sports the following school year. All students are asked to wear shorts and T-shirts for the physicals. Contact the high school nurse at (315) 781-0402 ext. 2100 or the Office of Athletics at (315) 781-4168 if you have any questions.
