SUBJECT: EIGHTH GRADE ACCELERATION
The Geneva City School District will continue its efforts of providing students with honors and advanced placement courses. However, it should be understood that acceleration is not appropriate for all academically qualified students. Acceleration, therefore, must be considered based on the following points:
- Acceleration should be entered into only if it is viewed as a long-term process. Goals for the senior year and beyond should be determined at the time of initial consideration of acceleration at eighth grade.
- A student’s social maturity and interpersonal skills must be taken into account when acceleration is considered. Placement in a class of academic peers does not insure that the accelerated student will have the social and emotional experience necessary to relate to students who are a year or more older.
- Honors courses are currently available at the high school for the superior students. Additionally, advanced placement courses are also available. For many students, the enrichment provided by these programs can be more challenging and rewarding than acceleration.
Rules and criteria have been developed by the administration for the implementation of the acceleration policy.
