SUBJECT: EXTRACURRICULAR TRIPS

The Board of Education recognizes that extracurricular trips are an educationally sound and an important ingredient in the overall program of the schools.  Such trips can provide extra opportunities for all students to supplement the normal program.  Such trips should:

  1. Be appropriate educationally or competitively for the students involved.
  2. Be scheduled to minimize loss of instructional time.  If the trip is to cause loss of instructional time, the school administrator will review the trip and make a decision as to the educational value of the trip versus loss of instructional time.
  3. Be sponsored with an inclusive intent by a class team, grade, club or similar group.  The sponsor will propose criteria for selection to go on extracurricular trip.  If the building involved has an eligibility policy for student participation, the sponsor will address how that policy will affect those eligible for the trip.
  4. Not be compulsory and should not directly affect a nonparticipant’s academic grades, team eligibility or other similar standing within the group involved.
  5. If supplemental funding is necessary, refer to Board of Education policies:
    1. 7450 – Which references fund raising by students and administrative approval.
    2. 3261 – Which references solicitation of charitable donation by students.
    3. 6110 – Which references the solicitation and/or acceptance of gifts of over a value of $75.  This defines what gifts are and what can and cannot be accepted as a gift.

For purposes of this policy, an extracurricular trip shall be defined as any journey by a group of students away from the school premises, under the supervision of a coach, teacher or advisor, which is an extension of an approved school program or scheduled event.

Every employee of the Geneva City School District shall not, directly or indirectly, solicit or accept any gift having a value of seventy-five dollars or more, whether in the form of money, services, loan, travel, entertainment, hospitality, thing or promise, or any other form, where it could be inferred that the gift was intended to influence him/her or intended as a reward.  If a gift is accepted, the employee shall obtain written confirmation of the fair value of the gift from the donor and submit this information for approval along with the field trip request.

The School System shall obtain written permission for students going on school-sponsored extracurricular trips.
