Opt In!

Posted Tuesday, March 19, 2019 —

The New York State Department of Education has made some significant changes to the NYS 3–8 Assessments because of feedback received from schools, parents, and other key stakeholders.

Reasons every student should opt in:

  • The Geneva City School District (GCSD) and individual buildings cannot get out of accountability status if assessment participation is below 95 percent.
  • Measures of every subgroup population are generated as an accountability metric. If all of our students don’t test, our schools/district is only represented by those who do. We want an accurate picture of all of our student performance.
  • Measures of every subgroup population are compared to other “similar” schools. If all of our students don’t test, our school is only represented by those who do. We want an accurate picture of all of our student performance.
  • If we do not get out of Comprehensive Support & Improvement (CSI) Schools status in two years, Geneva Middle School and North Street school will become receivership schools and will be subject to NYSED takeover. We need to have our scores represent our whole student population.
  • Building our community means showing all potential newcomers accurate school data. Because so many students aren’t represented on these tests, our GCSD data doesn’t reflect our successes, which can impact whether new families decide to reside in Geneva.
  • It’s time to opt in!
