Athletic trainer joins GCSD

The Geneva City School District welcomed a new personal trainer to athletics this fall.

Caitlin Ketcham is an employee of Finger Lakes Health and will work in the district Wellness Center and be present at athletic games and practices to help athletes prevent and recover from injury.

The addition was made in part because of a recommendation from The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, which recommended that all high school athletic programs have a trainer on staff.

“Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals that specialize in evaluation and treatment of orthopedic injuries,” explained Geneva City School District Athletic Director Tricia Budgar. “Caiti will help to create policies and procedures that will maintain the health and safety of our students.”

Her presence streamlines the healthcare of athletes as she will be the first point of contact at time of injury. Ms. Ketcham’s presence will allow coaches to focus on developing team and sport skills while she focuses on healthcare and injury rehabilitation. “Once the program is established, Caiti hopes to build a student shadow program where students can learn about the profession,” said Mrs. Budgar.

“Few schools in New York State benefit from such a position, and I am thrilled that Geneva will now be one of them,” said Geneva City School Superintendent Trina S. Newton.
